This is America’s moral 9/11

We’re elected a tyrant, but in order survive as a constitutional republic we must continue to play by the rules

This is our moral 9/11. It’s an interesting dilemma.

Our country has unwittingly elected a narcissistic tyrant, who has already provided us ample evidence that he is corrupt, a liar and a sexual predator.

Now, we see solid evidence that Russia tipped the balance in his favor, yet he denies these activities had any influence on the outcome of the election.

Why is that?

Because any rational person with two eyes understands that: 1) of course Russia’s activities influenced the election; 2) this evidence throws the result (and his legitimacy) into question, but 3) it is impossible to prove that Russia’s activities resulted in his victory.

Does any of this bother his supporters? Hell no.

He is aided and abetted by a Republican party that has clearly chosen party over country. They know exactly who this man is, but they think they can control him.

Already the most extreme elements of the Republican party are gleefully working to deny medical coverage to 30 million Americans without so much as a Plan B.

Large numbers of his supporters will lose their health coverage, but that doesn’t seem to bother anybody.

You’d think folks would be up at arms, right?

The incoming president hasn’t even taken office, and already he’s broken several of his most popular campaign promises. And still the crowds cheer.

If this doesn’t make sense to you, that’s because it isn’t sensible.

This is not a rational conversation. This man’s supporters are irrational. That’s what you get from 30 years of increasingly toxic right-wing media pumping out fear, anger and hatred.

I could go on, but let’s skip to the punchline.

Our moral dilemma is that if we want to continue as a constitutional republic and a liberal democracy, we must continue to play by the rules.

That means this guy takes office on January 20 — like it or not.

Once in office, this new president will continue to break the rules, violate our norms and piss on our country’s values.

But there’s more.

Never forget we humans are herd animals. We may be surprised — and shocked — at how many people will go along with the new order.

Would it surprise you to know that I am optimistic?

I could be wrong, but I don’t think Americans are going to take this lying down. I believe we’re better than that.

This is the biggest test our republic has faced since the Civil War.

This is our moral 9/11.
